An Indian-origin student has gone viral on social media after confronting US Vice President JD Vance over the Trump administration’s restrictive immigration stance during an event at the University of Mississippi. The heated exchange, captured on video, has sparked widespread discussion about America’s shifting immigration policies and their impact on legal migrants.
During the session, the student passionately questioned Vance’s assertion that the United States should drastically reduce legal immigration. “When did you decide that number?” she asked. “You made us spend our youth and wealth in this country and gave us a dream. How can you now say we don’t belong here anymore?” Her remarks were met with applause from the audience, highlighting the growing frustration among international students and immigrant communities.
The student further brought up Vance’s personal life, referring to his wife, Usha Vance, who is of Indian origin, asking why “one has to be Christian to prove love for America.” Responding calmly, Vance said that while his wife accompanies him to church, her beliefs are her own. He added that he respects her faith and personal freedom, even as he hopes she might one day share his Christian beliefs.
Defending his stance, Vance argued that while many immigrants contribute positively to the US, it doesn’t mean the country should accept “a million or ten million” newcomers annually. He emphasized the need for immigration limits to protect American workers and national interests.
The confrontation has since gained massive attention online, symbolizing the growing divide between immigrant communities and policymakers. Many viewers praised the student for voicing the concerns of thousands who fear that tightening immigration policies under the Trump-Vance administration could jeopardize their dreams of building a future in the United States.
