India’s journey as a World Cup-winning nation began in 1983 under the inspirational leadership of Kapil Dev. In what remains one of the greatest upsets in cricket history, India defeated the dominant West Indies in the final at Lord’s Cricket Ground to claim its first-ever ODI World Cup title.

The next major milestone came in 2007 when a young Indian team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 2007 in South Africa. India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan national cricket team in a thrilling final to become the first T20 world champions.

Dhoni again scripted history in 2011 when India won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, defeating Sri Lanka national cricket team at Wankhede Stadium. His iconic match-winning six remains one of the most memorable moments in Indian cricket.

More than a decade later, Rohit Sharma led India to T20 World Cup glory in 2024 and repeated the feat in 2026, becoming one of the guiding captains to win multiple ICC World Cups.

With five World Cup titles—1983, 2007, 2011, 2024, and 2026—India has firmly established itself as a powerhouse in international cricket. The latest triumph not only celebrates the team’s dominance but also continues a proud legacy of visionary captains who have shaped the nation’s cricketing destiny.
