Innovative Plan to Enhance Road Safety: Multi-Layered Cattle Fences Along National Highways

The frequent occurrence of accidents involving cattle crossing fast-moving highways poses a serious threat to both the animals and the passengers. Recognizing this hazard, the central government has formulated a comprehensive approach to mitigate such accidents. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, unveiled a pioneering initiative aimed at averting these incidents by implementing multi-layered cattle fences.

The concept behind this ingenious strategy is to prevent cattle from wandering onto the roads and causing perilous accidents. Gadkari elaborated that the multi-layered cattle fence will stand at a height of 1.20 meters and is set to be installed along a specific section, stretch 23, of National Highway 30. This visionary scheme was introduced as a pilot project ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Chhattisgarh.

A striking feature of this initiative lies in its eco-friendly design. The cattle fence is meticulously crafted using bamboo, a sustainable resource that aligns with the government’s environmental commitment. The bamboo is treated with creosote oil and coated with high-density polyethylene (HDPE), rendering it remarkably sturdy and durable, far surpassing the longevity of conventional steel.

Furthermore, the cattle fence boasts a remarkable Class 1 fire rating, ensuring not only effectiveness but also adhering to the principles of a self-reliant India, popularly known as “Aatmanirbhar Bharat.” This innovation epitomizes the government’s dedication to fostering safety on highways while championing sustainable materials and methods.

With this innovative approach, the central government aspires to significantly curtail accidents involving cattle and create safer road conditions for both the travelers and the animals. By combining innovation, sustainability, and safety, this initiative stands as a testament to India’s commitment to modernizing its infrastructure while safeguarding its natural resources.
