Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has handed over INS Himgiri, the first of three Project 17A Nilgiri-class guided-missile frigates, to the Indian Navy. The vessel was delivered at a formal ceremony attended by Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth of the Eastern Naval Command at GRSE’s Kolkata shipyard.

INS Himgiri, a 149-metre-long stealth warship displacing 6,670 tonnes, is the most advanced vessel ever built by GRSE and marks its 112th warship delivery. Designed for multi-role operations, the frigate is armed with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, AESA radar, and a comprehensive suite of sensors, ensuring defence against air, surface, and sub-surface threats.

The ship is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system and supports a crew of around 225 personnel. It also includes helicopter and boat-launching capabilities.

Part of a ₹21,833 crore contract, the Project 17A initiative has significantly boosted domestic defence manufacturing, involving over 200 MSMEs and increasing indigenous content to 75%. GRSE is currently constructing 15 vessels across four ship classes.

INS Himgiri is expected to be commissioned soon, strengthening the Navy’s eastern fleet and advancing the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision in defence.
