The India national cricket team retained the No.1 position in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings released by the International Cricket Council, continuing their dominance in the 50-over format despite a slight drop in rating points.
India remained at the top with 118 rating points after the ICC’s annual update, staying comfortably ahead of the New Zealand national cricket team, who climbed to second place with 113 points. The Australia national cricket team continued in third position with 109 points.
One of the major developments in the updated rankings was the rise of the South Africa national cricket team, who moved to fourth place with 102 points. Their improvement pushed the Pakistan national cricket team down to fifth place with 98 points. Cricket analysts believe the rankings have become increasingly important as teams prepare for qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
According to ICC qualification rules, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings by March 31, 2027, will earn automatic qualification for the World Cup along with hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. Since South Africa already qualify automatically as co-hosts, the competition for the remaining qualification spots is expected to intensify over the coming months.
The ICC annual update gives complete weightage to matches played since May 2025, while results from the previous two years are counted at reduced value. The ranking system is designed to reward recent performances while maintaining consistency over a longer period.
Further down the standings, the Sri Lanka national cricket team remained sixth, followed by the Afghanistan national cricket team in seventh and the England cricket team in eighth place. The Bangladesh national cricket team and the West Indies cricket team completed the top 10 rankings. The latest update has increased focus on ODI cricket as teams begin long-term preparations for the 2027 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
