IPS Sujoy Lal Thaosen Takes Charge as New SSB DG

Thaosen, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was handed over the baton by officiating DG and ITBP chief Sanjay Arora at the headquarters of the force in R K Puram.

Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sujoy Lal Thaosen took charge as the new Director General (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on Wednesday-1st June 2022.

Thaosen, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was handed over the baton by officiating DG and ITBP chief Sanjay Arora at the headquarters of the force in R K Puram.

He was accorded a guard of honour, after which senior SSB officers briefed him, a senior official said.

Serving as a special DG in the BSF till now, Thaosen is the 21st head of the SSB that guards unfenced Indian borders with Nepal (1,751 km) and Bhutan (699 km), apart from rendering a variety of internal security duties like conducting anti-Naxal operations.

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had on 31st May 2022 issued orders for the appointment of the officer to the top SSB post that had been lying vacant since the retirement of Kumar Rajesh Chandra in December last year.

As per the ACC order issued by the Personnel Ministry, Thaosen has been appointed as the SSB DG “up to 30.11.2023, i.e. date of his superannuation or till further orders whichever is earlier”.

The officer earlier served in the Special Protection Group (SPG), which protects the prime minister, for almost nine years, apart from serving with the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina during 1999-2000.

Meanwhile, taking to twitter, SSB wrote, “Sh. S. L. Thaosen, IPS (MP:88) joined as Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on 01.06.2022. Sh. Sanjay Arora, IPS DG, ITBP handed over the customary baton to Sh. Thaosen at the Force HQ #SSB New Delhi.”

58-year-old Sujoy Lal Thaosen is a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre.Hailing from Haflong in Assam, IPS officer Sujoy Lal Thaosen holds PhD from Ujjain University.

Sujoy Lal Thaosen was born on November 6, 1963 at Haflong in Assam. Thaosen had served different forces in various capacities, including the Special Protection Group (SPG) that is entrusted with the task of providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and former Prime Ministers.

Sujoy Lal Thaosen had served twice in the SPG and was taking care of the security of PM Manmohan Singh and former Prime Ministers of India.

Thaosen also served the United Nations as part of the international Police Task Force (IPTF).

He was deployed in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1999 to 2000.

He supervised important events like Republic Day, Independence Day celebrations in Delhi and Commonwealth Games 2010.
