Iran Seeks FIFA Guarantees Over Treatment During 2026 World Cup in US

Iran’s football authorities have sought assurances from FIFA regarding the treatment of Iranian officials and institutions during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, amid rising diplomatic tensions involving the United States and Western nations.
Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj said he plans to meet FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the coming days to discuss concerns related to Iran’s participation in the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The issue emerged after Canadian authorities reportedly denied entry to Taj and other Iranian officials because of alleged links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has been designated as a terrorist organisation by Canada and the United States. Iranian officials criticised the decision and described it as politically motivated.
Speaking to Iranian media, Taj said Iran expects FIFA to ensure that all participating nations are treated equally and respectfully during the World Cup. He warned that insults or restrictions targeting Iranian institutions, including the IRGC, would be unacceptable. According to him, FIFA has a responsibility to guarantee fair treatment for all member associations regardless of political disputes.
The controversy comes against the backdrop of continuing tensions in West Asia and strained relations between Iran and the United States. The regional conflict has already raised concerns regarding security arrangements, travel permissions and diplomatic protocols linked to the tournament.
Despite the growing dispute, FIFA has reiterated that Iran will participate in the 2026 World Cup as scheduled. Infantino recently confirmed that the Iranian national team would play its matches in the United States, rejecting speculation that fixtures could be moved to alternative host nations. Iran secured qualification for the World Cup earlier this year and is expected to make its seventh appearance at football’s biggest tournament. Preparations for the competition are continuing, with the national team planning training camps and friendly matches ahead of the event.
