Delhi Begins Cloud-Seeding Trials to Induce Artificial Rain, Ease Pollution

In a bid to tackle the worsening air pollution, the Delhi government, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, launched its first cloud-seeding trials on Tuesday. The project aims to induce artificial rain over parts of the capital to settle airborne pollutants and improve air quality.

According to officials, two sorties were conducted over north and northwest Delhi, marking the beginning of the ₹3.21 crore pilot project. Under the plan, five such trials are expected, depending on weather conditions. During the operation, flares containing silver iodide and sodium chloride were released from an aircraft flying between 4,000 and 5,000 feet across a 46-km stretch from Khekra to Burari.

However, meteorologists have cautioned that the chances of rainfall remain limited due to inadequate cloud moisture. “The current moisture level is only 15–20%, which makes successful precipitation unlikely,” said science editor Pallava Bagla.

The initiative comes as Delhi continues to struggle with toxic smog and hazardous air. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 306 on the day of the trial, categorizing the air as “very poor,” with several areas crossing 320.

Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that operations would proceed based on cloud conditions and visibility. “If weather permits, we will continue with the next phase of the trials,” he said, expressing cautious optimism.

While cloud seeding offers a short-term method to reduce particulate matter, experts warn it cannot replace structural pollution control measures such as curbing emissions from vehicles, industries, and crop burning. The trial marks Delhi’s first large-scale attempt at artificial rain, representing a scientific experiment that could pave the way for future urban climate interventions if proven effective.
