Israeli Airstrikes in Lebanon Leave 16 Dead as US-Iran Diplomacy Faces Setback

At least 16 people were killed in a wave of Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Thursday, intensifying regional tensions and dealing a fresh blow to diplomatic efforts aimed at easing conflict in the Middle East. The strikes came as planned talks between the United States and Iran were postponed, raising concerns about the future of a recently announced peace initiative.
Lebanese officials reported that Israeli aircraft carried out multiple attacks on towns and villages in the country’s south, with the Nabatieh region among the hardest hit. Rescue teams and emergency workers were deployed to affected areas as reports emerged of casualties and extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure. The death toll was expected to rise as search operations continued.
The Israeli military said the strikes were directed at positions linked to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group that has been engaged in cross-border hostilities with Israel. According to Israeli authorities, the operation targeted militants, weapons storage facilities and military infrastructure that allegedly posed a threat to Israeli security. The military accused Hezbollah of violating ceasefire understandings through repeated rocket launches, drone attacks and other hostile activities.
The escalation has complicated efforts to implement a US-brokered agreement designed to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States and restore stability across the region. The proposed framework included commitments aimed at reducing violence in several conflict zones, including Lebanon, while also ensuring safe navigation through strategic waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic discussions scheduled to take place in Switzerland between American and Iranian representatives were subsequently delayed. Reports suggested that Tehran expressed concerns over continuing Israeli military operations, arguing that the strikes undermined the spirit of the peace arrangement. The postponement has created uncertainty about whether negotiations can proceed as originally planned.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel would continue taking action against threats from Hezbollah and signalled that military operations could continue if necessary. Meanwhile, Lebanese authorities and international observers warned that renewed violence could further destabilise the region.
