Israeli Archaeologists Discover The Oldest Known Written Statement
What is the oldest sentence ever recorded on paper? You are correct if you are pulling out your hair while trying to figure out the solution. May this tusk rip out the lice of the hair and the beard win the honor.
The earliest complete sentence in the oldest known alphabet is made up of 17 letters written in early Canaanite script on an ivory comb that is about 3,700 years old, according to archaeologists in Israel who published their findings on November 9.
The phrase contains 13 words when translated into English. The comb was discovered in the Lachish excavations in ancient Israel.
Archaeologist Mumcuoglu works at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. The comb has 14 teeth and measures 3.6 cm long by 2.5 cm wide. The group said that the comb’s center had deteriorated, presumably due to the strain of fingers holding it while combing hair or removing lice. When the comb was examined under a microscope, the second tooth had 0.5mm to 0.6mm of head louse debris.
The discovery has strengthened the case for earlier theories put forth by academics that the first alphabet appeared between 3,800 and 3,500 years ago somewhere in the southern Levant, or the area that is now Lebanon, Israel, and the Sinai Peninsula.
Some academics have suggested that scripts that emerged around that time in the southern Levant are where the majority of historic and contemporary alphabets used in Europe, the Middle East, and some regions of Asia have their roots.
Numerous Canaanite inscriptions have been discovered by archaeology teams working in the area over the past several decades, but they were all only two or three words long.
