Israeli Forces Capture Strategic Castle in Deepest Advance into Lebanon in Over Two Decades

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/1st June 2026

Israeli troops have seized control of the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, marking the deepest military incursion into the country by Israel in more than 26 years. The development represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah and has intensified concerns about the possibility of a broader regional confrontation.

The operation followed days of intense military activity, including airstrikes and ground assaults across parts of southern Lebanon. Israeli forces advanced through several areas before taking control of the hilltop fortress, a site long regarded as one of the most strategically important locations in the region. Perched on a commanding ridge, the castle overlooks large stretches of southern Lebanon as well as areas near Israel’s northern border, making it a valuable military position.

Israeli military officials described the capture as a key achievement in their campaign against Hezbollah, the Iran-backed armed group that has been engaged in frequent cross-border clashes with Israel. According to Israeli authorities, the operation was aimed at dismantling militant infrastructure and preventing attacks originating from Lebanese territory.

The seizure of the castle carries symbolic as well as strategic significance. During Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon between 1982 and 2000, the fortress served as an important military outpost. Its recapture has revived memories of that period and sparked concern among Lebanese officials, who have accused Israel of expanding its military presence deeper into Lebanese territory.

The advance is considered one of Israel’s most substantial territorial gains since the current phase of fighting began. Analysts note that Israeli forces have pushed beyond areas traditionally associated with border operations, indicating a shift in the scale and objectives of the campaign.

International reactions have been swift, with several governments and diplomatic organizations calling for restraint. Concerns have been raised that continued escalation could undermine ongoing efforts to achieve a ceasefire and increase the risk of a wider Middle East conflict. Humanitarian agencies have also warned about the impact of the fighting on civilians living in southern Lebanon, many of whom have been displaced by the violence.

As diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, the capture of Beaufort Castle has added a new dimension to the conflict. Observers believe the coming days will be critical in determining whether the situation moves toward de-escalation or further military confrontation, with regional stability hanging in the balance.
