Israeli military attacks killed at least 15 Palestinians in Gaza on Sunday, according to medics, as Israeli soldiers continued to assault the enclave and blew up houses along its northern border. An Israeli bombardment killed six individuals in a house in Nuseirat, central Gaza, and three more in a residence in Gaza City, according to medics. Two children were killed when a missile struck a tent encampment in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip, while four others were killed in an attack in Rafah, near Egypt’s border, medics said.
Residents reported that Israeli soldiers blew up groups of houses in the northern Gaza communities of Jabalia, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun, where they have been operating since October of this year. Palestinians claim Israel’s actions on the enclave’s northern border are part of a plot to push people out via forced evacuations and bombardments to create a buffer zone, which the army rejects.
The military claims to have killed hundreds of Hamas militants in Gaza as it attempts to prevent the faction from reorganizing nearly 14 months after the war began. Since the latest campaign began, Hamas’ armed wing claims to have killed numerous Israeli forces in anti-tank rocket and mortar fire attacks, as well as in explosive-laden ambushes.
Two Palestinian detainees from Gaza have died in Israeli detention, according to prisoner advocacy groups, raising the total number of confirmed deaths to 47 since the war began. They identified the two guys as Mohammad Idris and Muath Rayyan, both in their thirties. The Israel Prison Service stated that the cases were not under its authority, and there was no quick response from the military, which operates detention centers.
Israel has disputed allegations by Palestinian and international human rights organizations that detainees have been abused and tortured in its jails and detention facilities. Meanwhile, Hamas leaders met in Cairo with Egyptian security officials to discuss how to negotiate an agreement with Israel that would ensure the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees. The visit was the first since the US stated on Wednesday that it will resume talks with Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey to broker a cease-fire in Gaza.
Hamas is seeking an agreement to halt the war, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the war will cease only when Hamas is eradicated. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed over 44,300 people and uprooted practically the entire population, according to Gaza officials. Large areas of Gaza are in ruins. The conflict began when Hamas-led militants assaulted southern Israeli settlements on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli officials.
