Japan’s New PM Pledges Stronger Ties with US Ahead of Trump Visit

Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has vowed to elevate the country’s relationship with the United States, ahead of President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Tokyo. In her first policy address to parliament, Takaichi emphasised the need for a “relationship of trust” with Washington and outlined her plans to enhance Japan’s security and international standing.

Highlighting defense as a key priority, Takaichi announced that Japan will allocate 2% of its GDP to military spending this fiscal year, achieving the government’s target two years ahead of schedule. She stressed that stronger defense capabilities are essential to respond to the growing military activities of China, North Korea, and Russia, which she described as “a grave concern.”

Takaichi’s remarks coincide with President Trump’s planned visit to Japan, part of a broader regional tour including discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. Trump has consistently urged allies in the region to increase military spending, aligning with Takaichi’s accelerated defense policy.

China responded cautiously to Japan’s defense initiatives, expressing concern that increased spending and relaxed arms export restrictions could raise doubts among neighboring countries about Japan’s commitment to a defensive posture. Analysts say the new policies reflect Japan’s effort to assert strategic autonomy while maintaining strong ties with the U.S.

In addition to foreign policy, Takaichi addressed domestic challenges such as Japan’s stagnant economy and declining population. She proposed measures to attract foreign workers to offset labor shortages and stimulate economic growth, while emphasizing a controlled immigration policy.

Observers note that Takaichi’s leadership signals a shift in Japan’s approach to both international and domestic policy. Her focus on security, economic revitalization, and close cooperation with the United States underscores her intent to strengthen Japan’s regional influence and ensure stability amid growing geopolitical tensions in East Asia.
