Jharkhand High Court Grants Bail to Former Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Land Scam Case

The Jharkhand High Court has granted bail to former Chief Minister Hemant Soren in connection with an alleged land scam case. This decision came after the court reserved its order on June 13 regarding the bail plea submitted by Soren, who is also the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
According to Arunabh Chowdhury, Soren’s advocate, the court has determined that Soren is not prima facie guilty of the offense. Moreover, the court sees no likelihood of Soren committing an offense while out on bail. This ruling represents a significant development in the case that has seen Soren embroiled in legal battles with the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Soren, argued strongly for his bail. During a hearing before a vacation bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Satish Chandra Sharma, Sibal contended that Soren has been falsely implicated. He asserted that the accusations against Soren, particularly regarding the alleged usurpation of an 8.86-acre plot in Bargain, Ranchi, do not fall under the offenses stipulated by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Despite these arguments, Soren had been detained, further intensifying the legal and political drama surrounding the case.
The land scam case revolves around substantial proceeds of crime generated through the manipulation of official records. The ED’s investigation revealed the use of fake sellers and purchasers, supported by falsified or counterfeit documents, to acquire large parcels of land worth crores of rupees.
