JioHotstar, the largest streaming service in India, has expanded its paying subscriber count to more than 200 million, propelled by multi-language live streams of the incredibly popular Indian Premier League cricket games, according to a senior executive.
This achievement positions JioHotstar as the third-largest video streaming service worldwide by user numbers, behind only Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video. All three are engaged in a struggle for dominance in India’s rapidly expanding yet highly competitive streaming sector.
As JioStar actively attracts users with affordable charges and live sports broadcasts, Netflix is increasing its production of original local content, while Prime Video has partnered with Apple TV+ and Crunchyroll to draw in audiences. Shankar, instrumental in facilitating the Disney-Reliance media merger, stated that the larger goal is to onboard every potential customer in the nation onto his platform.
