Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir recently highlighted the significant progress and peace achieved in the region over the past five years. This period marks the end of the special status previously granted to the erstwhile state and its subsequent reorganization into two Union Territories. Speaking ahead of August 5, the anniversary of this historic change, Sinha emphasized the government’s efforts to ensure normalcy and development across J&K.

In a detailed interview with The Indian Express, Sinha underscored the government’s commitment to bringing peace and fostering development. He noted that institutions such as schools, colleges, hospitals, and businesses are now operating smoothly throughout the year. This stability contrasts sharply with the unrest that previously plagued the region.

Sinha, who assumed office in August 2020, assured that the long-awaited Assembly elections would be held soon. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks, which reiterated the government’s intention to conduct elections at the earliest possible date. Sinha expressed confidence that an elected government could function effectively alongside the Lieutenant Governor’s office. He emphasized that both entities share a common goal: peace and development.

A key aspect of Sinha’s tenure has been the implementation of a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. He pointed out that this approach has resulted in a more peaceful environment in the Valley. For instance, Srinagar, which was once a hotspot of conflict, now sees people enjoying the night ambience in areas like Lal Chowk, Polo View, and the Jhelum riverfront. The presence of security forces has decreased significantly compared to previous years, further highlighting the improved security situation.

Sinha also addressed the challenges posed by Pakistan, which he accused of trying to disrupt the peace in J&K. He noted that global events like the G20 tourist working group meeting in Srinagar and the peaceful conduct of the Lok Sabha elections have sent a strong message to the world about the region’s stability. The recent terror incidents in Jammu, though regrettable, are seen as acts of desperation by hostile neighbors.

Despite the challenges, Sinha highlighted the success of security forces in eliminating top militant commanders in the Kashmir division. He noted a significant decrease in the recruitment of local militants and a sharp drop in civilian and security personnel casualties. These achievements reflect the effectiveness of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy.

To address the increased number of terror incidents in the Jammu division, Sinha mentioned that additional paramilitary, police, and Army personnel have been deployed strategically. He expressed confidence in the government’s ability to eliminate terrorists and dismantle the terror ecosystem, just as they have done in the Valley.

Sinha also pointed to the record voter turnout of 58.46 percent in the recent general elections as evidence of the people’s faith in democracy. He remarked that the residents of Jammu and Kashmir have moved beyond mere sloganeering and are now committed to the principles of democracy, or “jamhooriyat.”

In conclusion, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s tenure has seen significant strides in bringing peace and development to Jammu and Kashmir. His administration’s focus on security, development, and democratic processes aims to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the region.
