John Cena wins Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania, breaks all-time record

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 22nd April 2025

John Cena triumphed over Cody Rhodes in the WrestleMania 41 main event, winning the Undisputed WWE Championship and setting a record for the most WWE titles ever.

The bell sounded at the main event on Sunday, and the two rivals absorbed the atmosphere for the highlight match. They secured the tie, and Cena exited the ring. They grappled again, and Cena escaped once more, telling Rhodes, “leave me alone.” The third connection proved successful for Cena as he positioned Rhodes in a headlock, but Rhodes swiftly responded and got to his feet to perform a drop kick. Cena stepped outside, but Rhodes confronted him with a dive and pulled him back in.

Cena then delivered a series of stomps to Rhodes followed by a powerful boot to his face. The 16-time titleholder was dominant, tossing Rhodes around. Cena attempted a swift pin, but Rhodes quickly escaped it. The challenger appeared to enjoy tormenting the champion, lounging on the top turnbuckle between strikes.

There were glimpses of a youthful Cena executing moves like a spinning DDT, along with some classic moves included. While Rhodes was on the ground, Cena lifted his hand up high. As he attempted the five-knuckle shuffle, Rhodes struck him in the face to change the momentum.

Cena earned the chance to confront Rhodes at Elimination Chamber, but he stunned the WWE universe by turning heel and launching a brutal, shocking attack on Rhodes. Since that time, Cena has criticized fans, claiming they were never content with his achievements and continually wanted more from him. He grew weary of the abuse, and rather than prioritizing the best interests of the fans, he decided to concentrate on victory − regardless of the consequences.

With this victory, Cena becomes a 17-time WWE Champion, surpassing Ric Flair for the highest number in WWE history. This is his first time holding the WWE Championship since February 2017, marking the longest drought of his career at seven years. As he approaches his final year in the ring, he is establishing a record that may endure for years to come as his hall of fame career nears its conclusion.
