Justice D.Y. Chandrachud Has Been Chosen As India’s 50th Chief Justice

According to Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
On November 9, the day after current Chief Justice of India Justice Uday Umesh Lalit leaves office after turning 65, Justice Chandrachud will take the oath of office.
With effect from November 9th, Mr. Rijiju tweeted, “In exercise of the power provided by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President names Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India.”
Justice Chandrachud will be the Chief Justice of India for two years, compared to Justice Lalit’s brief 74-day term. The date of his resignation is November 10, 2024.
After Justice Lalit, Justice Chandrachud is currently the senior Supreme Court justice. He was appointed to the court on May 13, 2016.
Justice Chandrachud held the position of Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31, 2013, until his elevation to the Supreme Court. He also served from March 2000 to October 2013 as a judge at the Bombay High Court.
Justice Chandrachud, who views dissent as the safety valve of democracy, is renowned for his insightful rulings. His dissenting opinions have occasionally eclipsed the primary verdict in addition to pricking the powerful’s conscience. His major Supreme Court rulings include, among others, the decriminalization of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, the admission of women to Kerala’s Sabarimala shrine, and the recognition of the right to privacy as a basic right.
