North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for a significant expansion of the country’s nuclear weapons programme after inspecting a newly disclosed nuclear-material production facility, signalling Pyongyang’s continued commitment to strengthening its strategic capabilities.
According to North Korean state media, Kim visited the facility and reviewed progress in the production of nuclear materials used for weapons development. During the inspection, he praised scientists and technicians for their work and urged them to accelerate efforts aimed at boosting the nation’s nuclear deterrent.
The visit offered a rare glimpse into a key component of North Korea’s nuclear infrastructure. Analysts believe the facility is linked to uranium enrichment activities and forms part of the country’s broader strategy to increase the production of weapons-grade nuclear material. Experts say the move reflects Pyongyang’s determination to expand both the size and sophistication of its nuclear arsenal despite ongoing international sanctions and diplomatic pressure.
State media reports indicated that Kim emphasized the need to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities in response to what North Korea describes as growing security threats from the United States and its allies. He reportedly directed officials to pursue long-term plans for increasing nuclear material output and advancing weapons development programmes. Security analysts warn that expanding production capacity could enable the country to build additional nuclear warheads and enhance its military capabilities in the years ahead.
The development comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula and growing concerns over regional security. Diplomatic efforts aimed at denuclearisation have largely stalled in recent years, with North Korea continuing to conduct weapons tests and expand its military programmes.
