According to a Friday report from the official news agency KCNA, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared that his country would not think twice to use all of its offensive capabilities, including nuclear weapons, should the adversary try to usurp its sovereignty via force. At a military day celebration on Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol made a threat to overthrow the North Korean dictatorship. Kim took issue with the statement, saying it demonstrated which side was undermining regional security and peace.

Kim said Yoon “bragged about overwhelming counteraction of military muscle at the doorstep of the state possessed of nuclear weapons and it was a great irony that caused the suspicion of being an abnormal man,” KCNA reported.

“He affirmed that ‘if’ the enemy, seized with extreme foolishness and recklessness, attempt to use armed forces encroaching upon the sovereignty of the DPRK … the DPRK would use without hesitation all the offensive forces it has possessed, including nuclear weapons,” KCNA added.

Kim reportedly declared as much on Wednesday at an army special operations unit training base, according to KCNA. North Korea is thought to possess enough fissile material to produce dozens of nuclear warheads, and the country has been pursuing a nuclear weapons program for decades. It has carried out six tests of nuclear explosion underground. In honor of the yearly Armed Forces Day, South Korea had a military parade on Tuesday that included a flyby by an American aircraft and a ballistic missile that was capable of delivering a sizable warhead.

In a speech, Yoon forewarned Pyongyang that employing nuclear weapons would result in “a resolute, overwhelming response from our military and the U.S. alliance.” “That day will see the end of the North Korean regime,” Yoon stated.Kim stated that “the enemies’ threatening rhetoric, action, trick and attempt did not check the DPRK’s powerful military strength and will not take away our nuclear weapons forever,” according to KCNA.
