India extended their control over the first Test against England at Headingley, reaching 153 for 3 at lunch on day four, with a lead of 159 runs. KL Rahul played a pivotal role, scoring an unbeaten 72 to steady the innings after England struck early in the session.
India began the day at 90 for 2, leading by 96 runs. England made an early breakthrough when Brydon Carse bowled Shubman Gill for just 8, putting the hosts on the front foot. However, Rahul, showing patience and discipline, held firm at one end. He brought up his 18th Test half-century with a mix of solid defense and calculated strokes, surviving a dropped chance by Harry Brook on 58.
Joining him at the crease was Rishabh Pant, who counterattacked with an unbeaten 31. The duo forged a crucial stand that frustrated England’s bowlers, as the pitch continued to show variable bounce.
Rahul’s knock marked his third fifty in English conditions, underlining his adaptability. His steady partnership with Pant helped India recover from the early loss and build a significant lead. With conditions set to favor bowlers later, India are in a commanding position heading into the afternoon session.
