Kolkata Gains Ground as Startup Hub with Lower Attrition, Says Suyash Saraf

Kolkata is gradually emerging as a promising destination in India’s startup ecosystem, offering unique advantages such as workforce stability and a driven talent pool, according to Suyash Saraf, founder of Dot & Key.
Sharing his perspective, Saraf noted that while Kolkata may lack a deep pool of experienced startup professionals compared to cities like Bengaluru or Mumbai, it compensates with a strong base of young and motivated individuals. He highlighted that startups in the city often invest in nurturing fresh talent, which in turn leads to a more committed and loyal workforce.
One of the key advantages, Saraf said, is significantly lower employee attrition. Unlike major startup hubs where frequent job changes are common, Kolkata offers greater workforce continuity. This stability allows companies to focus on long-term growth without the constant need for rehiring and retraining, improving operational efficiency.
Saraf also pointed out that the relatively calm and less competitive environment in Kolkata enables founders to concentrate on building their businesses without excessive external pressure. This fosters thoughtful decision-making and a stronger emphasis on understanding consumer needs, rather than chasing short-term trends.
Reflecting on his entrepreneurial journey, he emphasised that building a startup in Kolkata can be cost-effective, allowing companies to scale with limited initial investment. The city’s ecosystem, though still evolving, encourages disciplined growth and innovation.
Looking ahead, Saraf stressed that sustained investment in talent and ecosystem development will be crucial for Kolkata’s continued rise. As more entrepreneurs recognise these benefits, the city is steadily positioning itself as a viable alternative to traditional startup centres in India.
