Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Disciplinary Actions Taken Against Senior Police Officers Amid Hospital Vandalism Investigation

News Mania Desk/Agnibeena Ghosh/22nd August 2024

In the wake of the recent rape and murder case in Kolkata, significant disciplinary measures have been implemented within the Kolkata Police department due to alleged negligence during a crucial incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident in question involved vandalism at the hospital on the night of August 14, and the fallout has led to the suspension of two Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and an inspector, who were reportedly on duty at the hospital during the time of the event.

The suspended officers include ACPs Shakir Uddin Sardar and Ramesh Shah Chowdhury, along with Inspector Rakesh Minz. Officials have confirmed that a departmental inquiry has been initiated to thoroughly investigate the circumstances that led to the vandalism under their watch. The disciplinary actions reflect the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the case, especially given the sensitive nature of the crime and the subsequent public outrage.

In addition to the suspensions, the investigation has taken a deeper turn as an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Kolkata Police, Anoop Dutt, was summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning. Dutt is suspected of having a close association with Sanjay Roy, one of the primary accused in the alleged rape and murder case. The CBI’s interrogation of Dutt focused on his relationship with Roy and any potential knowledge he might have had about the events that transpired on the night of the incident. The connection between Dutt and Roy has raised concerns about possible collusion or neglect of duty, further complicating the investigation.

The CBI is also expanding its investigation to include Roy’s relatives, indicating that the inquiry is far from over. The agency’s approach suggests that they are leaving no stone unturned in unraveling the full extent of the crime and any possible cover-ups or lapses in the case.

Adding another layer to the ongoing investigation, Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, has come under scrutiny. Ghosh has appeared before the CBI for questioning for the fifth consecutive day, facing inquiries about inconsistencies in his previous statements. The CBI is particularly interested in Ghosh’s actions regarding the demolition of an adjacent portion of a seminar room and the subsequent repair work that was initiated during the investigation. These actions have led to allegations of dereliction of duty and possible attempts to conceal evidence.

The disciplinary actions and the ongoing investigation underscore the gravity of the situation and the determination of the authorities to ensure accountability. The suspensions of the senior police officers signal a strong message that negligence, especially in cases involving such serious crimes, will not be tolerated. The involvement of the CBI in questioning police personnel and other officials further highlights the complexity of the case and the need for a thorough and unbiased investigation.

As the investigation continues, more developments are expected, with the potential for further disciplinary actions or revelations that could impact the outcome of the case. The public’s demand for justice remains high, and the authorities are under intense pressure to ensure that all those responsible, whether directly or indirectly, are held accountable for their actions.
