Kolkata to Get Water Metro as West Bengal Unveils ₹22,700 Crore Maritime Development Plan

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a major maritime infrastructure push, revealing that Kolkata will soon be connected through a Water Metro system, making it the 18th city in India to adopt the modern transport network.The Chief Minister stated that the state will participate in the Centre’s Sagarmala 2 programme and is preparing project proposals worth ₹22,700 crore over the next five years. The proposed investments will focus on strengthening coastal fishing infrastructure, maritime connectivity, logistics, and island development, while generating new economic opportunities along the state’s coastline.Adhikari also unveiled plans for 44 new jetties, an underground tunnel project, and the development of Sagar Island, where beach restoration work has already been sanctioned. He further emphasized the government’s vision of transforming the Sagar Mela into an internationally recognized event, positioning West Bengal as a key maritime and tourism hub.
