The Lok Sabha was momentarily halted after meeting at 4.40 p.m. on Wednesday due to outrage over TMC member Kalyan Banerjee’s statements against Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Trouble ensued when Banerjee spoke during a debate about revisions to the Disaster Management Act.
The All India Trinamool Congress member accused the central government of non-cooperation during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai refuted this, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assisted all states and successfully managed the crisis by bringing everyone along.
Rai further claimed that the West Bengal government attempted to obstruct the transit of Covid vaccinations across its region.Scindia stood up and endorsed Rai, claiming that India had emerged as a “Vishwa Bandhu” during the pandemic, assisting all needy countries throughout the world.
Following this, Banerjee attacked Scindia and made remarks against the minister that were later removed by Speaker Om Birla.During the heated battle between the Treasury and Opposition benches, the Chair adjourned the House till 5 p.m. Banerjee apologised for his remarks after the House resumed at 4.40 p.m., but Scindia refused to accept them.
“Kalyan Banerjee has said sorry. We all come to this House with the spirit of contributing to the nation’s development,” Scindia said adding, however, there will be no compromise on self-respect. “If you will get personal, be prepared for the response also…I do not accept his apology,” he added.
