Madagascar President Dissolves Government Amid Youth-Led Protests

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 30th September 2025

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina has dissolved his government following days of violent youth-led protests over worsening power and water shortages. The unrest, among the most serious in years, has left at least 22 people dead and more than 100 injured, according to the United Nations.

In a televised address, Rajoelina acknowledged failures in his administration, apologizing for ministers who “did not carry out the tasks assigned to them.” He announced that proposals for a new prime minister would be considered within three days, pledging to reset the government and open “space for dialogue” with young citizens. The president also promised measures to support businesses that were damaged during the protests, which saw shops looted and property destroyed.

The demonstrations began last week in the capital, Antananarivo, led largely by students and young activists frustrated by prolonged power outages, water shortages, and poor governance. Inspired in part by Gen Z movements in Kenya and Nepal, protesters demanded not only improved public services but also the resignation of Rajoelina and Prime Minister Christian Ntsay.

Security forces used tear gas, rubber bullets, and curfews to disperse crowds as thousands took to the streets. Despite the dissolution of the cabinet, protesters have continued to march, saying the move falls short of their demands for sweeping political change.

Rajoelina, who first came to power in a 2009 coup before being elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2023, now faces one of the most significant challenges of his presidency. The turmoil underscores deepening frustration in one of the world’s poorest nations, where infrastructure breakdowns and economic stagnation have eroded public trust.

As protests persist, Madagascar’s leadership remains under intense pressure to deliver immediate relief and demonstrate meaningful reform.
