Civil aviation minister K Ram Mohan Naidu informed NDTV that airlines will reduce airfare for flights to Prayagraj for Mahakumbh pilgrims starting Saturday, February 1. He stated that the government has instructed airlines to lower ticket prices, mentioning that three meetings took place with airline companies prior to executing the fare decrease.
In a special interview, Ram Mohan Naidu mentioned that airlines were reminded of the significance of such a major event (Mahakumbh), which occurs once every 140 years. He also stated that the civil aviation minister has assured that the government will prevent airlines from incurring financial losses due to the cutbacks.
This follows shortly after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) urged airlines to ‘adjust ticket prices’ to Prayagraj after they surged to more than ₹50,000.
“In view of likely surge in demand, DG (CA) met airlines on 23 January 2025 and urged them to increase further capacity by adding flights and rationalize fares,” DGCA said in an X post on January 25.
For January, DGCA also approved 81 additional flights to meet the increased demand. With this, the number of flights operating to and from Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj increased to 132.
