Mahua Moitra Lodges FIRs Against X Accounts Over Allegedly Fake Chats With Prashant Kishor

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has filed multiple First Information Reports against several accounts on social media platform X, accusing them of circulating fabricated and defamatory chat screenshots allegedly involving her and political strategist Prashant Kishor. Calling the content completely fake, Moitra has said the material was created and spread with the deliberate intent to malign her reputation and invade her privacy.
According to the complaint, the screenshots, which went viral on social media, were projected as private conversations between Moitra and Kishor. The MP has categorically denied the authenticity of these chats, asserting that they were doctored and falsely attributed to her. She has alleged that the circulation of such material amounts to criminal defamation, cybercrime, and harassment, and has demanded strict legal action against those responsible for creating and amplifying the content.
The FIRs were lodged in West Bengal’s Nadia district, where police have initiated an investigation into the origin and dissemination of the screenshots. Moitra has reportedly provided law enforcement with details of several X handles that she believes played a key role in spreading the alleged fake chats. She has also warned that legal action will extend not only to the original creators of the material but also to those who knowingly shared or promoted it. Police officials involved in the probe have indicated that preliminary checks suggest the screenshots do not appear to be genuine. Investigators are examining digital evidence to identify how the images were generated and whether coordinated efforts were involved in amplifying them online. The case has also highlighted the growing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in dealing with cyber-related offences that often cross state boundaries.
As part of the investigation, a court reportedly issued a non-bailable warrant against one of the accused individuals after he failed to respond to police notices. A West Bengal Police team subsequently travelled outside the state to execute the warrant, though no arrest was made during the visit. The development has drawn attention to procedural hurdles and inter-state coordination issues in cybercrime cases.
Moitra has described the incident as a serious example of how misinformation and manipulated content are being weaponised in political battles. She has maintained that such acts are aimed at silencing voices through personal attacks rather than engaging in substantive political debate. The MP has reiterated that she will pursue the matter legally until accountability is fixed. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to take further steps based on forensic findings, while the case underscores the increasing legal scrutiny of online misinformation and character assassination in the political sphere.
