Jhargram : West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized the Central Government during an election rally in Jhargram. She spoke about tribal identity, religion, the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and border security.
Addressing the rally, CM Banerjee promised that if the TMC returns to power in the state, the Sari-Sarna religion would be given official recognition. Her statement appeared to be aimed at gaining the support of tribal communities ahead of the assembly elections.
The Chief Minister also expressed serious concern over the proposed Uniform Civil Code. She alleged that the BJP-led Central Government is trying to end the traditional marriage customs, rituals, and social practices of tribal communities through the UCC. She warned that such a move could become a major threat to the identity and existence of tribal people.
Continuing her attack on the Centre, Mamta Banerjee demanded the resignation of the Union Home Minister over border security issues, though she did not mention him by name directly. She said that stopping infiltration is the responsibility of the Central Government and border security forces, not the State Government.
In a sharp political attack, CM Banerjee described the BJP as a “two-faced snake.” She claimed that the party makes attractive promises during elections but later works against the interests of the people.
She also tried to connect emotionally with tribal voters by recalling an earlier controversy involving the garlanding of Birsa Munda’s statue. Through this, she appealed to tribal sentiments and called on people to vote in large numbers in the coming assembly elections.
The rally showed that tribal identity and religion are likely to become major issues in the upcoming election campaign in West Bengal.
