Mamata Banerjee Files Nomination from Bhabanipur, Signals High-Stakes Electoral Contest

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee/8th April 2026

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday filed her nomination from the Bhabanipur constituency, formally entering the fray for the upcoming Assembly elections and setting the stage for a closely watched political battle. The filing was preceded by a large roadshow led by Banerjee, who walked from her residence in Kalighat to the nomination centre at Alipore. Accompanied by senior leaders and a sizeable gathering of party supporters, the show of strength underscored the importance of Bhabanipur in the electoral landscape. The Chief Minister greeted supporters along the route, projecting confidence as she seeks another term in office.

Bhabanipur has long been considered a stronghold of Banerjee and holds significant symbolic value for the ruling Trinamool Congress. Her decision to contest again from the constituency highlights its strategic importance for the party. The seat is expected to witness an intense contest, with opposition parties gearing up to challenge the Chief Minister in what is likely to become one of the most high-profile battles of the election.

During the nomination process, Banerjee also raised concerns over electoral issues, particularly regarding the revision of voter lists. She alleged that names of several voters, including those from minority and marginalised communities, had been removed unfairly. The issue, she indicated, would be a key point in her campaign as she seeks to mobilise support across sections of society. The filing of nomination papers marks a crucial phase in the election process, with campaigning set to intensify across the state. Banerjee expressed optimism about her party’s chances, reiterating her commitment to continuing governance and development initiatives if re-elected.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have stepped up their efforts, aiming to capitalise on key issues and mount a strong challenge to the ruling dispensation. The political climate in West Bengal has grown increasingly charged, with rallies, public meetings, and campaign messaging gaining momentum. Bhabanipur, in particular, is emerging as a focal point in the electoral contest, given its political significance and the stature of the candidates involved. As the campaign progresses, all eyes will be on the constituency, which could play a crucial role in shaping the broader narrative of the Assembly elections.
