West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a significant pledge on Monday regarding the brutal rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. Banerjee stated that she would hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if local police do not resolve the case by Sunday.

During her visit to the victim’s residence, Banerjee emphasized that the CBI would be brought in if the police fail to make progress by the deadline. Despite her promise, Banerjee also expressed skepticism about the efficacy of central investigations, noting that the success rate of the CBI has been less than satisfactory.

The case has sparked widespread outrage and ongoing protests. In response to the incident, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s principal, Sandip Ghosh, resigned from his position, citing the intense scrutiny and allegations directed at him. Ghosh denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the accusations against him were unfounded and politically motivated. He asserted that he had reported the crime to the police promptly and had provided them with CCTV footage to aid the investigation.

In her statement, Mamata Banerjee assured that her government supports the death penalty for the perpetrators of this heinous crime. She also conveyed her willingness to facilitate a CBI investigation if there is a lack of trust in the state’s handling of the case. Banerjee indicated that her administration would not oppose any demands for a central probe by the students or any other parties involved.

The autopsy report of the 28-year-old victim revealed disturbing details about the nature of the crime. According to the report, the assault occurred between 3 and 6 am. The victim sustained severe injuries, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, along with injuries to her face, nails, belly, left leg, neck, right hand, and lips. These findings highlight the brutality of the attack and the urgent need for justice.

The case has continued to generate significant public and media attention, further complicating the investigation and the response from authorities. The protests and demands for a CBI inquiry reflect the deep concern and frustration of the public over the handling of this tragic incident.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s promise to transfer the case to the CBI if local authorities do not meet the deadline underscores the gravity of the situation and the pressures facing the state government. As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the developments in the investigation and the potential role of the CBI in delivering justice for the victim and her family.
