The India men’s football team has a new head coach, with Manolo Marquez officially appointed to the role over a month after the contentious exit of Igor Stimac. The 55-year-old Spaniard, who has been involved with Indian league teams since 2020, steps into the position with immediate effect, according to a statement from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) released on Saturday.

Marquez brings a wealth of experience to the role, boasting over two decades in international football management. His appointment follows a turbulent period for Indian football, marked by Stimac’s departure in June amid dissatisfaction with the team’s performance in World Cup qualifiers. The AIFF expressed their enthusiasm for Marquez’s new role, with AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey highlighting their excitement about working with the new coach in the future.

In his previous role as coach of FC Goa, Marquez has demonstrated his capability and understanding of Indian football. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, noting his deep connection to India, which he considers “my second home.” Marquez is eager to contribute to the team’s success and bring joy to the millions of football fans across the country.

Stimac’s tenure with the Indian team, which began in 2019, ended in controversy. The Croatian, known for his role in taking Croatia to the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup, was dismissed after allegations surfaced that he used astrology in his team selection decisions. Under Stimac, India briefly achieved a top 100 FIFA world ranking, a significant milestone for the nation.

Despite these achievements, the team’s performance under Stimac did not meet expectations, leading to his departure and the search for a new coach. With India currently ranked 124th in the world, Marquez faces the challenge of revitalizing the team and restoring its standing in international football.

Marquez’s immediate focus will be on preparing the team for upcoming fixtures and working towards improving their global ranking. His extensive experience and familiarity with Indian football are expected to play a crucial role in his success as the new head coach. The AIFF and fans alike are hopeful that Marquez will lead India to new heights and reinvigorate the national team’s performance on the world stage.
