Massive dust storm barrelling over Mexico captured from space

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 22nd April 2025

A gigantic dust storm that moved through northern Mexico affected 15 municipalities and created dangerous conditions in the area.

The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) recorded remarkable timelapse satellite images of this impactful occurrence as it moved southward, offering a unique and detailed perspective of the event from space.

The dust storm, starting in the late afternoon and lasting until the early hours of April 20, produced hazy skies and greatly diminished visibility. The intensity of the storm compelled officials to close the Pan-American Highway, an essential transportation route, to avert accidents resulting from the hazardous travel conditions.

CIRA’s satellite imagery shows the vast extent of the dust plume as it gradually traversed the terrain, covering both urban and rural regions.

These storms, prevalent in dry and semi-dry areas, are caused by powerful winds that carry loose soil and dust particles into the air, frequently deteriorating air quality and presenting health hazards to inhabitants.

This occurrence aligns with a trend of regular dust storms in the area, as CIRA’s satellite records have captured many comparable events throughout Mexico, New Mexico, and Texas in recent months. These storms interrupt everyday activities while also emphasizing the persistent issues caused by arid conditions and climate fluctuations in the southwestern USA and northern Mexico.
