On Monday, Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati called on Delhi voters to move beyond caste, religion, and regional affiliations and back her party in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has nominated 69 candidates for the 70 positions in the Delhi Assembly, set to vote in February. The outcomes will be announced on February 8.
In a statement, Mayawati attributed the “deteriorating” situation of the national capital to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, the BJP-led NDA at the Centre, and former Congress administrations, pointing out problems like insufficient clean drinking water and substandard living conditions.
“The people of Delhi should reject narrow political agendas and vote for the Ambedkarite BSP to ensure a truly inclusive government,” she said. She also referred to the BSP’s past governance in Uttar Pradesh, portraying it as an administration committed to “Sarvajan Hitay, Sarvajan Sukhay” (welfare and happiness of all).
She cautioned the electorate, particularly residents of underprivileged colonies, about the “deceptive assurances” offered by opposing parties.
Mayawati claimed that the political conflicts among AAP, BJP, and Congress have obstructed Delhi’s progress, urging voters to stay alert to deceptive promises.
Emphasizing that the BSP is participating in the elections on its own, Mayawati expressed optimism for better results, as long as the elections are held “freely and fairly” without the impact of “financial influence, coercion, communal propaganda, or interference with electronic voting machines.”
