Tensions flared at Pacific Dental College and Hospital in Bhilon Ka Bedla, Udaipur, after a final-year MBBS student died by suicide in her hostel room on Thursday night. The incident, which occurred around 11 pm, has triggered massive student protests and raised serious allegations of staff misconduct and academic pressure.
According to police, the student, a native of Jammu and Kashmir, left behind a handwritten suicide note accusing two college staff members of persistent mental harassment. In the note, she detailed allegations of arbitrary academic failures, coercion over exam clearances, and unjust financial demands. She claimed students who couldn’t meet these demands were either failed or threatened with withheld results.
The student’s roommate found her unconscious and rushed her to the hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Following the discovery of the note, agitated students gathered outside the college, blocking the main gate and demanding justice. Protesters alleged a toxic academic environment, citing manipulation of attendance records and exploitation by staff.
The situation prompted swift administrative action, with the college expelling the two staff members named in the suicide note. Law enforcement officials have launched an investigation, and authorities have assured a resolution within two to three months.
This tragic incident has intensified concerns about student well-being and accountability within medical institutions. Activists and students are calling for systemic reforms and mental health safeguards. Meanwhile, the student’s family, backed by classmates, is demanding strict legal action and transparent inquiry into the role of college authorities in the alleged harassment.
As investigations progress, the Udaipur case has become a flashpoint in the broader conversation on institutional pressure and mental health in India’s higher education system.
