Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for restraint and dialogue as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Stressing the importance of diplomacy, the Prime Minister said that military confrontation cannot provide a lasting solution to global disputes.

Speaking during a joint press interaction with Alexander Stubb, the President of Finland, in New Delhi, Modi highlighted the need for countries to resolve conflicts through negotiations and respect for international law. He said India and Finland share similar views on maintaining global peace and stability through dialogue rather than warfare.

The Prime Minister noted that the world is currently facing several geopolitical challenges, including major conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. Referring to the escalating situation involving Iran, he expressed concern about the growing instability in the region and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions.

According to Modi, prolonged military confrontations often lead to humanitarian crises, economic disruption and long-term instability. He emphasised that peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue remain the most effective tools for resolving international tensions and preventing further escalation. The ongoing crisis has raised fears of a wider regional conflict after recent military strikes and retaliatory actions intensified hostilities. The confrontation has heightened security concerns across the Middle East and drawn global attention due to its potential impact on international trade, energy supply and regional stability.

India has been closely monitoring developments in the region, given its strong economic and strategic interests there. The Middle East is a key partner for India in areas such as energy security, trade and the welfare of millions of Indian citizens living and working in the region. During the meeting, Modi also underlined the importance of strengthening cooperation between India and European countries to address global challenges and maintain peace. He said partnerships based on democratic values and international cooperation are crucial in ensuring stability in an increasingly uncertain world.

The Prime Minister also referred to other ongoing conflicts around the globe, including the war in Ukraine, and reiterated that diplomacy must remain the central approach to resolving disputes.
