Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has strongly criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and its chairman Mohsin Naqvi over the decision to impose hefty fines on national players following their underwhelming performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The PCB reportedly fined each member of the squad PKR 5 million after Pakistan failed to progress to the semi-finals of the tournament. The decision came in the wake of mounting criticism over the team’s campaign, which saw inconsistent performances and an early exit despite high expectations.
Amir questioned the rationale behind penalising players alone, arguing that accountability should extend beyond the dressing room. He said that if the board believed punishment was necessary, then selectors, coaches and administrators should also share responsibility for the team’s failure. According to him, targeting only the players reflects an imbalance in how blame is assigned within the system.
The former left-arm pacer suggested that deeper structural issues, including team selection and planning, contributed to Pakistan’s disappointing showing. He emphasised that fines would not resolve fundamental problems and could instead damage morale within the squad. Amir’s remarks have added to the growing chorus of criticism from former cricketers who believe reforms, rather than financial penalties, are needed to improve results.
Pakistan’s campaign ended without a place in the knockout stages, sparking widespread debate among fans and analysts. While the PCB has defended its decision as a step toward enforcing discipline and performance standards, critics argue that a more comprehensive review of team management and strategy is required.
