The much-anticipated horror-comedy film Munjya, which draws inspiration from Marathi folklore, has officially made its debut on OTT platforms. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, this Bollywood movie was first released in theaters in June. It features a talented cast including Sharvari, Abhay Verma, Mona Singh, and Sathyaraj, bringing the unique blend of horror and comedy to the streaming world.
Disney+ Hotstar announced on August 23 that Munjya is now available for online streaming on its platform. The announcement was made through a vibrant Instagram post showcasing a motion poster featuring Sharvari and Abhay Verma, capturing the essence of the film. In Munjya, Sharvari plays the character Bella, affectionately known as Munni, which is central to the film’s plot.
Munjya is part of an expanding horror-comedy universe created by Dinesh Vijan, the visionary behind Maddock Films. This universe includes successful films such as Stree and Bhediya. The sequel to Stree, titled Stree 2, has been performing exceptionally well at the box office, accumulating ₹485 crore in gross worldwide earnings. The film stars Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, and has been a significant hit in theaters, reflecting the popularity of Vijan’s horror-comedy genre.
Reports suggest that a sequel to Bhediya is also in the pipeline. The original Bhediya starred Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon, with Abhishek Banerjee playing a recurring role that connects it to both Stree and its sequel. This continued expansion of Vijan’s cinematic universe has kept audiences eagerly awaiting each new release.
Munjya itself has garnered substantial attention, earning ₹125 crore in gross worldwide revenue against a production budget of approximately ₹50 crore. The film’s success at the box office highlights its appeal and the growing interest in this genre of horror-comedy.
In a recent update, Varun Dhawan, who previously starred in Bhediya, urged his fans to stay tuned for the post-credit scene in Munjya. Dhawan shared a brief video featuring his character Bhaskar from Bhediya, who cleverly camouflages with his surroundings using leaves and takes cover behind a rock. The clip also includes a cameo appearance by Abhishek Banerjee’s character, Janardhan, who provides Bhaskar with some attire.
This scene has now been confirmed as a teaser for Stree 2, where Dhawan’s character Bhaskar makes a special appearance, and Janardhan helps him with the clothes. This crossover element adds an extra layer of excitement for fans of the horror-comedy universe, linking the various films in an interconnected narrative.
Overall, Munjya is a noteworthy addition to the horror-comedy genre and is now accessible for streaming enthusiasts on Disney+ Hotstar. The film’s engaging blend of horror and humor, combined with its connection to Dinesh Vijan’s broader cinematic universe, makes it a compelling watch for fans of the genre.
