Naba Das, The State’s Minister Of Health, Was Shot By A Police Officer And Later Died
Breaking his silence of five days after the incident – which raised many questions – the DGP said it will take some more time to unravel the complete details even as some facts have come to the fore.
THE CRIME Branch is looking into the circumstances surrounding the killing of Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Naba Kisore Das “with an open mind”, state DGP Sunil Kumar Bansal said.
Breaking silence six days after the minister was shot dead by an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police, the DGP said it will take some more time to unravel the complete facts even as some facts have surfaced.
“The motive behind the crime is not established yet. It would be inconclusive to say as to which direction the investigation would proceed. Principles of a good investigation is that all options are open. We will not close our minds. Whatever evidence, clue or indication will emerge during investigation, we will take it to a logical conclusion,” DGP Bansal told reporters.
Odisha Health Minister Naba Das passed away from his bullet wounds on January 29 night, hours after being attacked. After being shot at point-blank range by an assistant sub-inspector of police, the minister suffered serious wounds. The incident happened at a crowded square in Brajarajnagar, a town in the Jharsuguda district of western Odisha.
Naveen Pattnaik, the chief minister, had denounced the act. Additionally, he met the minister’s son at the hospital where the minister was treated soon after the attack. After learning of his passing, Patnaik expressed tremendous sorrow and distress.
According to persons with knowledge of the situation, Das, 60, who was rumored to be the second-richest minister behind the Chief Minister, was attacked as he exited his car at Gandhi Chhak to attend a function. Then Gopal Das, a police assistant sub-inspector, opened fire on him at close range. Gupteswar Bhoi, a subdivisional police officer, claimed that bullets struck his chest on the left side. A second police officer was hurt in the assault.
