Nagpur rioters molested woman cop, shouted provocative slogans, FIR reveals

A woman police officer on duty was reportedly assaulted by a group of rioters involved in the communal violence that erupted in Nagpur a few days ago, as stated in an FIR filed at the Ganeshpeth Police Station.
Furthermore, the report highlighted that the group of rioters was observed shouting inflammatory slogans intended to provoke communal unrest in the vicinity. A total of 51 individuals have been mentioned in the FIR.
The FIR described how the accused tugged at the woman officer’s uniform and tried to behave inappropriately towards her. The officer, belonging to the Rapid Control Police (RCP) unit assigned to the location, promptly informed senior officials about the incident. After her complaint, an official case was initiated against the wrongdoers involved.
Besides the molestation allegations, the complaint also stated that the accused acted inappropriately towards other female police officers present at the location. The crowd reportedly displayed vulgar gestures and made indecent remarks, trying to intimidate the on-duty officers.
On Monday, Chitnis Park in central Nagpur witnessed violence after rumors circulated that a sacred text of a community was defiled amid a demonstration by a right-wing group calling for the eradication of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The scenario rapidly escalated when stones were thrown at the police, resulting in 34 personnel being injured.
A high-ranking official reported that twelve police officers, among them three District Commissioners of Police (DCPs), sustained injuries during the violence on Monday night. Approximately 50 individuals have been apprehended related to the stone throwing and fire-setting incidents to date.
