The National Flag Cottage Industry, located in Bengeri village, Hubbali, is a significant initiative run by the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangh (KKGSS). This industry specializes in the production of the national flag, an essential symbol of India’s sovereignty and unity. The industry is part of a larger effort by the KKGSS to promote the values of self-reliance, local craftsmanship, and the importance of Khadi and handloom industries in rural areas.
Historically, the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangh was established in the 1950s with the goal of reviving the Khadi movement and empowering rural artisans. It was also intended to support the weaving industry, especially in rural Karnataka, which played a significant role during the independence movement under Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of “self-reliance.”
In Bengeri village, the National Flag Cottage Industry began as an extension of these efforts, focusing on the meticulous and authentic production of the Indian national flag. The workers are skilled artisans who follow the strict guidelines of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure that every flag produced meets the prescribed specifications, including dimensions, color proportions, and fabric quality.
Currently, the National Flag Cottage Industry in Bengeri is not only a symbol of pride but also a thriving example of rural entrepreneurship. It provides employment to a large number of artisans and supports the local economy by promoting traditional handloom techniques. Moreover, it continues to supply flags to various government and non-government organizations, playing a vital role in the patriotic celebrations across the country.
