Several Nato members are sending troops, artillery, and air defence systems to secure its eastern flank after what Poland called an unprecedented Russian drone incursion into its airspace.

In the early hours of Wednesday, three Russian drones were shot down after crossing into Polish airspace.Other drones crashed to the ground and were later found across eastern Poland.Poland has requested a UN Security Council session about the incident, which will take place on Friday at 19:00 GMT.

The Czech Republic and the Netherlands responded to the drone invasion by pledging to send defenses to Poland, while Lithuania would get a German battalion and increased alerts about potential Russian strikes on Ukraine. Additionally, Germany announced that it would “intensify its engagement along NATO’s eastern border” and increase air policing over Poland.

Emmanuel Macron of France later declared that his nation will contribute three Rafale fighter jets to the defense of Poland’s airspace. A “mistake” may have caused the claimed incursion, US President Donald Trump, who has been making fruitless attempts to mediate an end to the conflict in Ukraine, told reporters Thursday.

“I’m not happy about anything to do with the whole situation, but hopefully that’s going to come to an end,” Trump said.

Speaking to parliament on Thursday, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz enumerated the assistance promises from Poland’s allies, stating that the Czech Republic would provide 100 soldiers and helicopters, while the Netherlands would provide artillery, 300 troops, and air defense systems. He added that planes may be used by the British and French to protect NATO’s eastern flank.

“Poland has repeatedly heard words of solidarity and empty gestures throughout its history,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said. “Today, we have concrete declarations.”

While Russian missiles and drones have already infiltrated other NATO nations, this was the most significant event of its kind since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Regarding allegations that Russia purposefully attempted to inflame tensions in Poland, the Kremlin stated that it had nothing further to say.  However, a lot of European and Polish politicians think the invasion was intentional.

“This Russian provocation…is nothing more than an attempt to test our capabilities,” Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki said, echoing comments by his German and French counterparts.
