Filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound has been announced as India’s official entry for the 2026 Academy Awards, marking a significant moment for contemporary Indian cinema. Featuring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa in lead roles, the film has already earned international acclaim at prestigious film festivals.

The drama, produced by Dharma Productions, first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation. It later travelled to the Toronto International Film Festival, winning the position of second runner-up for the International People’s Choice Award and once again receiving strong audience appreciation.

Adapted from the New York Times article “Taking Amrit Home”, Homebound addresses pressing issues of caste and religious discrimination in India, weaving them into the story of friendship and resilience. Set against the backdrop of contemporary challenges, the film follows Chandan Kumar, played by Vishal Jethwa, and Mohammed Shoaib Ali, portrayed by Ishaan Khatter. The two friends aspire to join the state police service but face deep-rooted societal barriers tied to identity and privilege. Their journey also intersects with Janhvi Kapoor’s character, who embodies similar struggles within a patriarchal and divided society.

The narrative culminates with a poignant reference to the migrant worker crisis during the COVID-19 lockdown, a chapter that left lasting scars on Indian society. Critics have praised the film’s balance of personal storytelling and social commentary, crediting Ghaywan with bringing raw authenticity and emotional depth to the screen.

With India now placing Homebound on the Oscars stage, expectations are high. The film’s combination of universal themes and distinctly Indian experiences could resonate strongly with global audiences, adding to the growing recognition of Indian cinema in international circles.
