New Tension In Meghalaya As Police Vehicles Are Damaged And The Internet Is Suspended

Miscreants attacked three police vehicles, including a city bus, and set a traffic booth on fire in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, on 24 November night, according to news agency ANI. The event happened on November 22 during a candlelight vigil held by various parties in opposition to the violence along the Assam-Meghalaya border.
In the shooting incident in the Mukroh area of Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, six people were killed, including five Meghalayans and a member of the Assam Forest Guard.
According to reports, in the most recent incident, demonstrators threw petrol bombs and stones at police troops sent in to quell unrest. To disperse the demonstrators and impose order, security personnel turned to fire tear gas rounds.
Shillong’s East Khasi Hills SP, S Nongtnger, informed ANI that the incident destroyed three police vehicles, including a city bus and a gypsy.
Amit Shah promised a central agency investigation: Sangma
Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, said on 24 November that Union home minister Amit Shah had promised to carry out his request for a central agency to look into the firing by Assam Police along the states’ border as the violence continued.
He claimed that during their discussion with Shah, he also demanded justice for the victims lost in the shooting and asked that the perpetrators be brought to justice. He emphasized that Assam Police officers had opened fire on innocent persons in the Meghalayan village of Mukroh in the West Jaintia Hills.
Meghalaya discontinues mobile internet for a further 48 hours
Following 24 November’s violence in Shillong, the Meghalayan government has decided to prolong the ban on mobile internet and data for an additional 48 hours. Seven districts have been subject to the suspension, according to a formal announcement.
In the districts of West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri- Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and South West Khasi Hills, the suspension that went into effect at 10.30 am on 24 November have been extended for an additional 48 hours.
