No Fuel Shortage in India, Assures Hardeep Singh Puri Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday assured that India is not facing any shortage of fuel despite rising global concerns over disruptions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Puri stated that the country currently has adequate supplies of key petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene and fuel oil. He emphasised that the government is closely monitoring developments in West Asia and has taken necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted energy supply across the country.

The minister’s remarks came amid growing concerns that escalating geopolitical tensions in the region could disrupt global oil shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most crucial energy transit routes, carrying a significant portion of global crude oil exports. Any instability in the region often triggers fears of supply disruptions and rising oil prices in international markets.

Puri urged lawmakers and the public not to give in to speculation or rumours regarding potential fuel shortages. He said the government has sufficient stock levels and supply arrangements in place to meet domestic demand and maintain stability in the energy sector.

India, one of the world’s largest importers of crude oil, relies heavily on shipments from West Asian countries. However, the minister noted that the government has worked over the years to diversify its sources of crude oil imports and strengthen energy security. These measures, he said, help protect the domestic market from sudden global supply shocks. The minister added that authorities are maintaining constant coordination with oil companies and other stakeholders to ensure smooth distribution of fuel nationwide.
