North Korea Demands U.S. Recognition as Nuclear Power, Rejects Denuclearization Talks

North Korea has firmly declared that future dialogue with the United States hinges on Washington accepting it as a legitimate nuclear weapons state. In a strongly worded statement, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, ruled out any revival of denuclearization talks, asserting that such discussions are now obsolete given the “changed reality” of North Korea’s enhanced nuclear capabilities.

The statement, released through state-run media, comes amid growing international speculation about potential diplomatic overtures involving former U.S. President Donald Trump, who held three high-profile meetings with Kim Jong Un during his presidency. Kim Yo Jong acknowledged that the personal rapport between the two leaders was “not bad” but warned against viewing their past interactions as grounds to pressure Pyongyang into surrendering its nuclear arsenal.

She emphasized that North Korea’s nuclear status is non-negotiable and any denial of this fact would be “foolish and dangerous.” She also hinted that Pyongyang may consider alternate channels of engagement if Washington genuinely seeks talks, but made it clear that the U.S. must first adjust its stance and abandon expectations of unilateral disarmament.

The message appears to be directed not only at the Biden administration but also at Trump and his potential return to office. While Trump has expressed openness to renewed talks with North Korea, Kim’s remarks underscore a shift in North Korea’s posture — now demanding recognition and respect as a nuclear state before any engagement.

The statement also comes amid closer strategic cooperation between North Korea and Russia, raising further concerns in Washington. Analysts view this declaration as part of a broader push by Pyongyang to gain diplomatic leverage while deterring military and economic pressure from the U.S. and its allies.
