Kharagpur, West Medinipur : Panic gripped the railway administration on Wednesday afternoon when a goods train carrying oil-filled tankers derailed inside the yard of Kharagpur Railway Station. Fortunately, the accident occurred just before the train was to enter the main line, preventing any disruption to passenger train operations and averting a major disaster.
Railway sources confirmed that the goods train was moving from the yard towards the main track when it passed three consecutive signals. Moments later, several wagons derailed suddenly. Given the wagons were loaded with oil, officials classified the incident as highly sensitive and immediately increased security in the area.
Senior railway officials, technical staff, and relief teams arrived promptly at the site. The affected section was cordoned off to facilitate a thorough investigation. Efforts were removed to the derailed wagons and repair the damaged tracks began without delay.

Officials assured the public that since the derailment took place inside the yard, the main railway line remained safe and fully operational. There was no impact reported on either passenger or other goods train schedules. A detailed inquiry has been ordered to determine the root causes of the derailment. Investigators will examine all possible factors including technical faults, signaling errors, and any malfunction in track points.
While the incident raised concerns about railway safety protocols, authorities emphasized that timely action helped prevent what could have turned into a serious catastrophe. Local residents and passengers have expressed relief following the swift handling of the situation.
