On Tuesday, during the second day of Pamplona’s San Fermin festival, one man was gored and seven others sustained minor injuries as thousands gathered in the narrow streets of the medieval city for the long-standing tradition of bull running.

The individual who was gored, described as older than 25, sustained an injury to his right armpit from a bull horn, according to a spokesperson for city emergency services. The other seven experienced bruises and contusions, with some located on the shoulder or head.

During the festival’s “encierros,” or bull runs, bulls are released into the streets and sprint towards the bullfighting arena. Numerous enthusiasts, many dressed in classic white shirts with red scarves, sprint alongside them.

On Tuesday morning, one of the bulls halted during his sprint and charged at the runners for several intense minutes.

The festival, which achieved worldwide recognition from Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 book “The Sun Also Rises,” spans one week in early July. Participants are sometimes gored at the numerous bull-running events held in Spain annually. Additional injuries are frequent. Over the years, a minimum of 16 participants have died during the Pamplona festival, with the most recent incident occurring in 2009.

In addition to the morning bull runs and afternoon bullfights, the San Fermin festival showcases nonstop singing, dancing, and drinking by participants. Religious celebrations are also held in tribute to the saint.
