“One nation, One election ”: Modi

News Mania Desk/ Piyal Chatterjee / 16th September 2024

Top sources claim that the Bhartiya Janata Party-led administration will not be deterred from pursuing the agenda that was pledged in 2014, the year Prime Minister Modi took office, despite its lower representation in the 2024 parliamentary elections.
The administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled several of its major campaign pledges during its first two terms in office, including building the Ram temple in Ayodhya, repealing article 370 in JK, and enacting the Citizenship Amendment Act. Another significant pledge in the BJP’s election program is the holding of One Nation-One Elections, which would see state assembly elections held concurrently with parliamentary elections.

According to sources, the NDA administration in power is determined to hold assembly and general elections at the same time. According to sources, One Nation-One Election will actually take place during current government’s term, and the BJP is attempting to rally the backing of other political parties as well. One Nation-One Election has been rejected by a number of opposition parties and chief ministers of states where opposition rule exists.

In order to save capital, lessen the strain on the administrative apparatus that oversees elections year-round, and conserve resources, Prime Minister Modi has been a proponent of changes to the electoral process and the simultaneous staging of general and assembly elections. In its report, the former president Ram Nath Kovind’s High-Level Committee on “One Nation-One Election” noted that conducting elections at the same time will increase the confidence of policy decisions and that holding elections often fosters uncertainty. The committee emphasized the benefits of holding simultaneous elections and said that “One Nation One Election” guarantees voter comfort and convenience, prevents voter weariness, and encourages higher voter turnout.

During his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort’s ramparts, the prime minister also argued in favor of simultaneous assembly and parliamentary elections.
