According to the Financial Times, OpenAI is in talks to remove a restriction that prevents Microsoft from accessing the start-up’s most advanced models until it achieves “artificial general intelligence” in order to unlock further investments.

According to the present terms, if OpenAI develops AGI – defined as a “highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work” – Microsoft’s access to such technology will be revoked.

According to the FT, the ChatGPT creator is looking into eliminating the constraint from its corporate structure, which would allow Microsoft to continue investing in and accessing all OpenAI technology if AGI is realized.Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ inquiries for comment. The clause was intended to prevent the technology from being utilized for commercial purposes, transferring ownership to OpenAI’s non-profit board. “AGI is explicitly carved out of all commercial and IP licensing agreements,” according to OpenAI’s website.

According to the website, the OpenAI board will determine when AGI is realized.According to the FT, OpenAI’s board is discussing the options and has not taken a final decision. Reuters initially reported in September that Microsoft-backed OpenAI was working on a plan to convert its core business into a for-profit benefit corporation that would no longer be governed by its non-profit board. In October, OpenAI closed a $6.6 billion funding round, valued at $157 billion.
